The Bismarck/Mandan Rifle and Pistol Association will host a Level 1 Pistol Coach School the weekend of December 4-5, 2021 at our indoor range – 5667 Skyway, Bismarck, North Dakota. Class times are approximately 8am – 5pm each day.
Class size is limited to 20 students.
The NRA, USA Shooting, and the CMP have developed the Coach Training Program to train coaches that can better run clubs and programs, insuring the future of our Shooting Sports. Students who successfully pass this class will receive Level 1 Coach credentials from the NRA.
Coach Schools go well beyond instructor courses. Emphasis on this coach school will be on the International Pistol Disciplines as well as NRA Precision Pistol. We will be covering the various Pistol Events, Equipment, Fundamentals and Technique, as well as the Mental side of shooting, Training and Goal Setting. We’ll also cover how to improve your ability to be an effective coach, and how to effectively interact with shooters and their families. Bring an open mind and be prepared for a fun and enjoyable weekend.
The cost of this Pistol Coach School is being covered in part by a generous grant from the MidwayUSA Foundation. Your only cost will be NRA’s certification fee of $35 for NRA members and $60 for nonmembers.

Frequently Asked Questions concerning the Level 1 Pistol class:
Here's some answers to questions I get about the L1 Pistol Course.
The L1 coach school is an entirely different course than the NRA Instructor course. There are literally tens of thousands of Instructors in the country, but I doubt there are 1000 coaches. An NRA Certified Instructor will teach a course and have students with him for a day or two. Conversely, a coach may work with an athlete for many years.
The L1 course covers Safety and Risk Management, the various International and Precision (Bullseye) events, Equipment, etc. It also covers how to be a coach and working with the athletes. It covers Mental training, how we learn, as well as how to run a successful program, successful tournaments, etc.
We also spend a good deal of time on the fundamentals of pistol shooting. I've been told many times that this was really what made this class great. I feel that that there are a lot of great people out there that can benefit from what we discuss.
Attached is a sample course outline – It’s close to what we use but I change it up a bit.
This class is not about Action Shooting – it’s about International Style Pistol and Bullseye.
There are 4 Coach Levels. Level 1 is a class. Level 2 is an online course called Human Kinetics. Level 3 (Advanced Pistol Coach) is another class. You get the Level 4 if the National Coach appoints you as Assistant National Coach.
The Johnson Family Marksmanship Center is the BMRPA’s indoor range. It is a 50 meter, 16 point, range. The range has been functional since January 2009 but there are still a number of areas that need more time and money. For example: some doors and finish work, range floor sealing, classroom equipment, etc.
The range is located at 4667 Skyway, Bismarck, ND, two blocks north and two blocks west of intersection of Hwy 1804 and 48 Ave. S (go south of the airport on U. Mary road).
